Regulation

What we know · Regulation

# Who has decided what.

Where a food stands depends on where you are standing. This page puts the two together: pick a place and see what its regulator has decided, and which kinds of food you can meet there. Every sentence below was checked against the source it names — the entry it came from carries that source and the date we checked it.

5 of 6 places carry a sentence with its source

## By place

A place shows a regulator sentence only when that sentence was checked against a source in an entry. A place with nothing to show says so instead of guessing.

### [Canada](/what-we-know/regulation/canada/)

Canada assesses a new ingredient before it can be sold, and the record of that work is public. Approval and availability are different things here, which is the mistake this page exists to avoid.

In Canada, a food or ingredient that counts as novel under the Food and Drug Regulations needs a pre-market safety assessment before it can be sold. [[pf-07]](/what-we-know/precision-fermented-protein/)

The United States has a named category for cultured animal cells and a consultation route for them. Mycoprotein has been sold there since the early 2000s.

The FDA's own name for this category is human food made with cultured animal cells, and it keeps a public inventory of it. [[cm-01]](/what-we-know/cultivated-meat-and-seafood/)

### [Singapore](/what-we-know/regulation/singapore/)

Singapore cleared cultivated meat for sale before anywhere else, and more than one company now holds an approval there. It is one of the few places where a diner can meet the category outside a laboratory.

Singapore approved the sale of cultivated meat first, clearing Eat Just's Good Meat brand in 2020. [[cm-05]](/what-we-know/cultivated-meat-and-seafood/)

The European Union decides novel foods centrally and has its own labelling vocabulary for fungal protein. No precision-fermentation protein was observed on the Union list at our check date.
